Dr. Steve Underwood is Director of Technology Planning and Assessment and the Connected Vehicle Proving Center in the College of Engineering at the Institute for Advanced Vehicle Systems (IAVS) at the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Dr. Underwood has a Ph.D. in Urban, Technological, and Environmental Planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. He has been Director of several research centers with a focus on vehicle communications, vehicle automation, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including the Connected Vehicle Proving Center (CVPC) at the University of Michigan - Dearborn, Transportation and Information Systems Planning (TISP) at the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), and the ITS Research Center of Excellence (RCE) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. He is currently directing the Fleet Automation Forum addressing automation of trucks in through the United States Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Vice Chair of the SAE On-Road Automated Vehicle Systems (ORAVS) technical committee is liaison with Functional Safety (ISO 26262). He is a former President of ITS Michigan.
