Neil Pedersen is the Executive Director of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a non-profit organization dedicated to convening experts, managing research, and providing innovative advice on transportation challenges facing the nation and the world. TRB is a program unit of the distinguished National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Pedersen joined TRB in 2012 as the Deputy Director of the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2), leading TRB’s efforts to ensure that the products of the $218 million SHRP 2 program were implemented around the country. In 2015, he became TRB Executive Director. Prior to TRB, Pedersen served 29 years at the Maryland State Highway Administration, with the last eight of those years as Administrator and Governor’s Highway Safety Representative.
Throughout his career, Pedersen has been involved in volunteer leadership roles with TRB and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). He chaired a number of TRB committees, including TRB’s Executive Committee in 2011. He was also Chair of the SHRP 2 Technical Coordination Committee for its Capacity focus area from 2005-2012. With AASHTO, Pedersen was Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on Highways from 2007 to 2011 and a member of several AASHTO policy committees.
