Jack Van Steenburg has dedicated his entire 34 year professional career to highway safety. He currently serves as Assistant Administrator and Chief Safety Officer for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. He is responsible for governing all adjudicative proceedings of the Motor Carrier and Hazardous Materials regulations. As the Chief Safety Officer he oversees all major investigations and crashes while constantly monitoring motor carrier safety and compliance trends. Van Steenburg serves as the Agency’s key safety advocate promoting critical and strategic partnerships with government and private entities throughout national commercial vehicle safety programs. Prior to his appointment as Chief Safety Officer in 2011, Van Steenburg served as FMCSA’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance.
Mr. Van Steenburg is responsible for leading the Offices of Research, Registration, Information Technology, Regulatory Development, and Driver & Vehicle Safety.
Prior to joining FMCSA in 2008 he served 25 years with the New York State Police rising through the ranks of Trooper through Staff Inspector, overseeing all highway safety programs. He served as the President of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and is a participant of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Highway Safety Committee.
Mr. Van Steenburg has an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
