Max Fuller



Max L. Fuller, Executive Chairman of U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc., has spent his entire professional career in the motor carrier industry. A native of Athens, Tennessee, Mr. Fuller grew up in the industry, working his way through college changing oil and pressure washing trucks for his father’s fleet, Southwest Motor Freight. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1975 with a B.A. degree in Finance and Business Administration, he held various executive leadership positions at Southwest Motor Freight, until he and a business partner formed U.S. Xpress, Inc. in 1985 with 48 trucks.

With more than 45 years of experience in the transportation industry, Mr. Fuller has driven U.S. Xpress to early adoption of technologies such as satellite communications, automatic traction control, auto-shift transmissions, among others. The Company equipped itself to meet the demands of customers while simultaneously improving its safety record, MPG and driver retention. As a result of this reputation, Mr. Fuller was tapped by Freightliner Trucks to design a tractor with a raised condo roof, designed for long haul runs by team drivers, which became the most popular truck design in the history of the motor carrier industry.

U.S. Xpress is recognized as a service, safety and technology leader in the trucking industry, earning an award for innovation from the Smithsonian Institute in 2000. The Company was the 2002 winner of the Kruesi Award for the Spirit of Innovation and the winner of the Quest for Quality award from Logistics Management & Distribution Magazine for 5 years in a row. In March, 2012 the Company was named Truckload Carrier of the Year by the National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council and in June Food Logistics Magazine named U.S. Xpress as a Top Green Provider. Inbound Logistics, as part of its G75 Green Supply Chain Partners list prominently featured U.S. Xpress with some of the innovations the Company has developed achieving better fuel efficiency, including the research U.S. Xpress has conducted in partnership with the SimCenter at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Over the last few years, the Company has extended its reach into Mexico with ownership of two operations providing various transportation and logistics services in that area. In 2007, U.S. Xpress was named by Forbes Magazine to its Platinum List as one of America’s 400 Best Big Companies. The Company’s revenues exceed $1.6 billion per year.

Mr. Fuller serves on the Board of Directors of SunTrust Bank, Chattanooga, N.A. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Enterprise Center in Chattanooga having received a Congressional appointment from Rep. Zach Wamp in 2004. He is a past member of the Chancellor’s Round Table at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Chattanooga Foundation. He was inducted into the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame in 2013 and honored as the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus. In 2015, Fuller was recognized as one of the 100 most influential business school graduates around the globe by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools and Businesses.

Mr. Fuller has been a frequent presenter on safety innovations and the effective deployment of truck technology as well as cutting-edge information technology solutions for the industry. His speaking credits include presentations before the National Transportation Safety Board, Department of Transportation, American Trucking Associations, Truckload Carriers Association as well as a host of other industry related events.

Mr. Fuller and his wife, Janice, reside in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They have three sons and four grandchildren.
