Session Description

This is a technical session focused on vehicular technologies and breakthroughs that will enable automated vehicles. It will provide "under-the-hood" insight into the devices and algorithms that are in development or already underway. The discussion will be guided based upon fixed technology areas, followed by a “what did we learn” synthesis session. This breakout will last two afternoons and include topics such as:

  • Communications
  • Sensors and Sensor Fusion
  • Positioning
  • Driver Monitoring
  • High Performance Computing

A common thread through these technology areas is that there is no agreed-upon best solution. We will highlight technical differences in each area with expert panelists favoring different approaches in moderated mini-roundtables. Experts will begin by providing short up-front explanations of their technology, followed by Q&A from the moderator and the audience.

The goals of this session are to:

  • Explore the range of key on-vehicle technologies needed to establish automated vehicles,
  • Gain an understanding of the state of play in development and deployment of these technologies, and
  • Realize the potential development paths to get these technologies into the automated car.

By the end of the session, we hope to develop enhanced:

  • Views of technology needs for successful models of deployment of automated vehicles, and
  • A set of research topics based upon the groups analysis of gaps.
